Product overview

Freight Elevators: working principle & applications

A freight elevator is the heaviest class of goods lift. The car platform, frame and guide rails are designed for point loads from pallet trucks and forklifts, with a floor and sill that can take repeated wheel loads without deforming.

Drive options include geared traction for frequent duty and hydraulic for low-rise heavy loads. Ropes, sheaves and counterweights are sized with generous safety factors, and the control system is configured for the way freight actually moves — often with an operator at the landing and loads that change at every trip.

Doors are chosen for openings as wide as the car. Vertical-lift bi-parting doors clear the full width for forklift access, while sliding industrial doors suit tighter spaces. Everything is finished for rugged service, with options for hot, dusty or washdown environments.

Safety & standard compliance

Safety is never optional

  • Governor & safety gear

Over-speed governor with progressive safety gear stops the car on the guide rails if it exceeds rated speed.

  • Overload sensor

Load-weighing device prevents departure and sounds a buzzer when the rated load is exceeded.

  • Interlocked doors

Landing doors are mechanically and electrically interlocked, so the car cannot move with any door open.

  • Emergency alarm & lighting

Battery-backed alarm bell and emergency light keep users reassured and visible during a power cut.

  • Final limit & buffers

Terminal slowdown, final limit switches and oil or spring buffers protect the pit and overhead.

Freight Elevators

Questions we get asked

Can a forklift drive into the freight elevator?

Yes, if specified. The platform, sill and rails are then designed for the forklift’s axle loads, which need to be shared during design.

Is a freight elevator the same as a goods elevator?

They overlap, but freight elevators are the heavier-duty class, built for industrial loads, forklifts and continuous use.

Can it work in a hot or dusty plant?

Yes. Sealed controls, galvanised finishes and protected components are available for demanding environments.
