Rope Hoist: working principle & applications
An electric wire rope hoist lifts by winding steel wire rope onto a grooved drum. A brake motor drives the drum through a gearbox; the rope reeves through a hook block to give the lifting capacity, and a limit switch stops the hook at its upper and lower positions.
Hoists are mounted on a fixed hanger, a mono rail trolley or a crane trolley, which makes them the basic lifting unit for mono rails, single-girder and double-girder cranes. Standard and low-headroom designs are available to suit the clear height under the beam.
Wire rope gives long life at heavy duty and quiet running. Dual-speed or VFD control provides slow, precise load placement with fast travel when empty, while a rope guide, overload limiter and thermal motor protection keep operation safe and predictable.

Values are typical and customisable. Final capacity, speed, dimensions and finishes are confirmed after the site survey and approval drawing.
Safety is never optional
- Emergency stop
Mushroom-head emergency stop cuts power to the drive from the control station.
- Overload limiter & rope guide
The hoist stops above rated load, and the rope guide keeps the wire rope seated on the drum.
- Limit switches
Upper and lower travel limits stop motion before the end of the stroke.
- Overload protection
Load-limiting device prevents lifting above rated capacity.
- Guarding & signage
Safety guards, rated-load plates and warning labels as per site requirement.
Questions we get asked
Wire rope hoist or chain hoist?
Wire rope hoists suit heavier loads, higher duty and longer lift heights. Chain hoists suit lighter loads and compact installations.
Can a rope hoist be added to an existing crane or mono rail?
Usually yes, subject to beam size and capacity. We check the beam and trolley match during the survey.
How do I choose duty class?
Duty class depends on lifts per hour and load pattern. We select it from your actual duty cycle so the hoist lasts.
